A Spanish jet with Spain’s defence minister experienced GPS issues near Kaliningrad amid tensions, but landed safely.
A Spanish military jet carrying Defence Minister Margarita Robles encountered a GPS disturbance near Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave on Wednesday while en route to Lithuania, according to Spain’s Defence Ministry, which provided no further details.
The flight, also carrying relatives of Spanish airmen involved in NATO’s new eastern flank air defence mission, was unaffected by the incident, with no injuries or damage reported.
The disruption occurred amid heightened regional tensions following Poland’s interception of drones and Spain’s reported interception of eight Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea.
Similar GPS issues have been reported in the region, including a previous incident involving European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, with Western officials suspecting Russian electronic interference.
Estonia and Finland have also attributed GPS disruptions to Russia, though Moscow denies involvement.
Most aircraft have backup navigation systems, ensuring safe flight during such events.
