San Diego opens its first dedicated detox and recovery center for homeless individuals, boosting capacity and addressing a rising overdose crisis.
Father Joe’s Villages has opened a 44-bed detox and sober recovery facility at the Paul Mirabile Center in San Diego, the city’s first dedicated site for homeless individuals struggling with substance use.
Located at 1501 Imperial Ave., the center offers medical care, on-site clinics, meals, laundry, and housing assistance to support recovery and transition to permanent housing.
The expansion increases San Diego’s detox capacity by over half, addressing a growing crisis: 291 homeless individuals died from overdoses in 2025, accounting for about a third of all overdose deaths in the county.
Officials, including Mayor Todd Gloria and Councilman Stephen Whitburn, praised the facility as a vital step in tackling homelessness and behavioral health challenges, emphasizing reduced barriers to care and a compassionate approach to healing and stability.
