Oregon Zoo sends polar bear Nora to Wisconsin for breeding; Kallik arrives from St. Louis.
The Oregon Zoo is relocating polar bear Nora to Wisconsin’s Henry Vilas Zoo as part of a national conservation effort to support a genetically diverse polar bear population.
Nora, a 9-year-old female, will join bear Berit and potentially breed.
In her place, 700-pound male Kallik, born in 2022 at the Toledo Zoo, will arrive from the St. Louis Zoo later this fall.
The move is part of the Polar Bear Population Alliance, a network of AZA-accredited zoos working to sustain the species amid threats from climate change.
Polar bears are listed as threatened under the U.S.
Endangered Species Act due to shrinking Arctic sea ice.
The Oregon Zoo’s new Polar Passage exhibit continues to support conservation goals, with Kallik expected to play a role in future breeding programs.
