Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, a top Heisman contender, will miss about a month after undergoing surgery on a broken right hand sustained during a win over Auburn. Despite playing the full game—throwing for 271 yards and rushing for 29, including a game-winning touchdown—Mateer is expected to return later this season. Head coach Brent Venables confirmed the surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles, is in Mateer’s best interest for long-term health. Sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will start in his absence for the upcoming game against Kent State on October 4. Oklahoma remains undefeated at 4-0 and is ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll.
