Police in Niger State, Nigeria, have arrested 14 suspects in connection with the theft and vandalism of over ₦4.8 billion in metals from the Kainji Power Plant’s navigation lock yard, with evidence pointing to a scheme involving security personnel and scrap dealers.
The investigation, prompted by a complaint in August 2025, began with the arrest of two supervisors and expanded after a confession led to the identification of 10 additional suspects, including guards and scrap dealers from Nasarawa village.
The stolen materials were removed using acetylene gas and heavy equipment between 2023 and 2025 and sold in Lagos, Kwara, and Osun States, with over ₦24 million in related financial transactions.
Authorities also uncovered a separate staged kidnapping case involving a fake abduction attempt to extort ₦7 million, with two suspects arrested on September 17 and 21 SIM cards linked to fraud seized.
Police continue to investigate and pursue additional suspects, emphasizing efforts to combat economic crimes and protect national infrastructure.
