Malaysia expands probe into Mahathir’s overseas assets to Switzerland, UK, Canada, and Japan amid defamation case.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has expanded its probe into former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s alleged overseas assets to include Switzerland, building on existing cooperation with the UK’s IACCC.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed international collaboration is underway, though specific asset details remain undisclosed.
The investigation stems from a 2023 defamation case Mahathir filed against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, which he claims is politically motivated.
The MACC is also examining potential holdings in Canada, Japan, and the UK, supported by a 2024 mutual legal assistance agreement with the UK’s National Crime Agency.
Mahathir denies possessing extraordinary wealth, calling the probe a tactic to delay his legal case seeking RM150 million in damages.
