Kenyan university staff strike over unpaid salaries and contract disputes; speaker urges dialogue and return to work.
Kenya’s National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged university staff unions to end their second-week strike disrupting all 39 public universities, calling for dialogue and a return to work.
The strike, driven by unpaid salary arrears totaling Sh11.53 billion from past collective bargaining agreements and demands for a new 2025–2029 agreement, has halted lectures, exams, and research.
Wetang’ula, after meeting union leaders, encouraged submitting formal petitions to Parliament, with the Public Petitions Committee set to hear both sides.
He emphasized the need to protect students’ education and stressed Parliament’s role in mediating a resolution, as unions accuse government agencies of ignoring a 2021 court order to fully fund the 2017–2021 CBA.
