John Painter, founder of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, has died.
A key figure in Australia’s classical music scene since the 1960s, he co-founded the Sydney String Quartet in 1966 and established the ACO in 1974, leading its landmark 1975 debut at the Sydney Opera House.
Known for his dedication and ability to unite artistic and administrative worlds, he led major music institutions and supported national competitions and organizations.
Honored with the Order of Australia in 1981 and the Sir Bernard Heinze Memorial Award in 2002, he nurtured young talent and fostered a vibrant musical community.
Tributes include a concert on October 12 and a gala on November 21 marking the ACO’s 50th anniversary.
He is survived by his partner Renée Goosens, sons, stepsons, and grandchildren.
