Iran and Russia to sign deal for eight nuclear plants, aiming for 20 GW by 2040, as U.N. deadline looms.
Iran’s nuclear chief Mohammad Eslami arrived in Moscow for talks, where Iran and Russia are set to sign agreements to build eight nuclear power plants, aiming for 20 GW of capacity by 2040, with four reactors to be located at the Bushehr site.
The project, part of a long-standing partnership, seeks to address Iran’s electricity shortages and expand its peaceful nuclear energy program.
The move comes amid U.N. Security Council deliberations on reimposing sanctions, following a failed resolution to permanently lift them, with Russia and China opposing the European push.
Iran insists its nuclear program is for civilian use, denies seeking weapons, and demands restored access to IAEA inspectors and negotiations with the U.S. as conditions for lifting sanctions.
A decision must be reached by September 27, or existing sanctions will automatically resume.
