India expands medical education with 10,023 new seats by 2028-29, boosting rural healthcare access.
The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase-III of a central scheme to expand medical education, adding 5,023 new MBBS and 5,000 postgraduate medical seats by 2028-29.
With a total investment of ₹15,034.50 crore—₹10,303.20 crore from the central government and ₹4,731.30 crore from states—the initiative will enhance existing government medical colleges, standalone postgraduate institutes, and hospitals.
The expansion aims to improve healthcare access, especially in rural and underserved areas, strengthen the medical workforce, introduce new specialties, and support universal health coverage.
It builds on previous efforts that added over 69,000 MBBS and 43,000 PG seats in the last decade, while also updating faculty recruitment rules to ensure qualified staff and promoting balanced regional development.
