India approves ₹2,192 crore rail upgrade in Bihar to boost freight, tourism, and connectivity.
The Indian government has approved a ₹2,192 crore project to double the 104-kilometer Bakhtiyarpur–Rajgir–Tilaiya railway line in Bihar, part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
The upgrade aims to enhance rail connectivity across four districts, benefiting around 1,434 villages and 13.46 lakh people, including residents of Aspirational Districts Gaya and Nawada.
It will improve access to major tourist and pilgrimage sites like Rajgir, Nalanda, and Pawapuri, while increasing freight capacity by 26 million tonnes annually for coal, cement, and other goods.
By shifting freight from roads to rail, the project is expected to reduce oil imports by 5 crore liters and cut CO2 emissions by 24 crore kilograms yearly—equivalent to planting one crore trees.
The initiative supports improved mobility, service reliability, and regional economic growth.
