FCC Chair's call to penalize Kimmel's show sparks free speech debate; network suspends broadcast, then resumes amid bipartisan backlash.
Senator Mitch McConnell praised Senator Ted Cruz for condemning FCC Chair Brendan Carr’s remarks urging broadcasters to act against Jimmy Kimmel, calling the comments an overreach that threatened free speech.
The controversy followed Kimmel’s Sept. 15 monologue criticizing Republicans, after which Carr, in a podcast, suggested stations could face FCC consequences for airing his show, prompting ABC to suspend it.
While Carr later denied issuing threats, claiming his comments were hypothetical, critics including Cruz and McConnell argued the remarks resembled intimidation and risked government interference in media.
The suspension, affecting nearly 60 stations, ended on Sept. 23, with Kimmel’s return, amid bipartisan concern over regulatory overreach and the FCC’s role in content oversight.
El llamado del presidente de la FCC para penalizar el programa de Kimmel desencadena un debate sobre la libertad de expresión; la red suspende la transmisión, luego se reanuda en medio de una reacción bipartidista.
