A deadly purple paste laced with fentanyl and other drugs is spreading in northern B.C., prompting a health alert until Oct. 7, 2025.
A toxic drug alert is in effect for northern British Columbia until October 7, 2025, due to a purple paste sold as "down" containing fentanyl, benzodiazepines, and medetomidine—substances that raise overdose risk, especially when smoked or injected.
The drug may not respond to naloxone and can cause severe respiratory depression.
Health authorities urge avoiding use alone, understanding tolerance, not mixing substances, and carrying naloxone.
Overdose prevention sites, including one in Fort St. John, offer safe use with staff.
Emergency help should be sought immediately in case of overdose.
