Colombia demands U.S. probe into Caribbean strikes killing 17, calling them unjustified and targeting migrants.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called for a criminal investigation into former U.S. President Donald Trump and other officials over three military strikes in the Caribbean in September 2025 that killed at least 17 people.
Speaking at the U.N. General Assembly, Petro rejected the U.S. claim that the targeted boats were linked to drug trafficking and the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang, asserting the victims were poor young migrants with no criminal ties.
He condemned the strikes as disproportionate and unjustified, accusing the U.S. of using drug allegations as a pretext for military action and criminalizing poverty and migration.
Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro echoed the criticism, warning of constitutional measures to defend national sovereignty.
The U.S. has defended the strikes as necessary to disrupt drug flows but has not disclosed how it identified the boats or passengers.
The incidents have sparked international concern over civilian casualties and the use of force in international waters.
