Brisbane's new 213-meter underground bus tunnel opens Sept. 29, 2025, cutting CBD congestion and boosting transit ahead of the 2032 Olympics.
Brisbane’s 213-meter Adelaide Street tunnel, set to open September 29, 2025, will link North Quay and King George Square, reducing bus congestion in the CBD by up to a third.
Part of the Brisbane Metro project, the underground busway replaces a congested surface route, carrying over 1,400 daily trips across major bus and metro routes.
Built after more than two years of construction and extensive testing, including heat and smoke simulations, the tunnel improves public transport reliability and supports future growth ahead of the 2032 Olympics.
It also includes a new bikeway across Victoria Bridge.
City leaders say it will enhance traffic flow, pedestrian access, and metro frequency, marking a major upgrade to the city’s transit network.
