Adelita Grijalva won Arizona’s 7th District special election, becoming the first Latina from Arizona in Congress.
Adelita Grijalva won a special election in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, succeeding her late father, former Rep. Raúl Grijalva, in a heavily Democratic, Hispanic-majority district.
She defeated Republican Daniel Butierez with about 71% of the vote, becoming the first Latina to represent Arizona in Congress.
Grijalva, a former Pima County supervisor and school board member, will serve the remaining 15 months of her father’s term.
Her victory maintains Democratic control of the seat and narrows the Republican majority in the U.S. House to 219-214, with two seats still vacant.
She campaigned on progressive issues including education, immigrant rights, and healthcare, and has pledged to support efforts to release federal investigation files related to Jeffrey Epstein.
