World War II veteran Dougie Shelley, a 100-year-old former Royal Navy gunner who served on HMS Milne during D-Day and the Arctic Convoys, celebrated his birthday with a tea party in Southend, Essex, after receiving over 16,000 birthday cards from around the world, including messages from the King, Downing Street, schools, care homes, and international supporters.
The outpouring of support, sparked by a local campaign, included gifts like a handmade blanket and commemorative plaque, deeply moved Shelley, who initially doubted attending but changed his mind upon seeing the response.
He was welcomed with a guard of honour and a traditional rum tot, honored for his wartime service and lasting community involvement.
