A 4-year-old South Carolina boy died from abuse-related cardiac arrest; his mother and a former trooper were arrested in connection.
A 4-year-old boy died in Oconee County, South Carolina, after a cardiac arrest at a home on Forest Acres Circle near Walhalla on September 19, 2025.
The Oconee County Coroner ruled the death a homicide following an investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
SLED arrested 30-year-old former Highway Patrol trooper Joshua Emanuel Lamar Latimer and 24-year-old Destiny Shay Dionne, the child’s mother, charging both with homicide by child abuse.
The child, who weighed only 21 pounds, showed signs of severe malnourishment.
Latimer, a Lance Corporal since 2017, was fired the day of his arrest.
Both remain jailed at the Oconee County Detention Center.
The investigation is ongoing.
