Will Berry asks Alabama governor to stop Geoffrey West’s execution, citing forgiveness and opposition to the death penalty.
Will Berry, son of Margaret Parrish Berry murdered in a 1997 Alabama gas station robbery, has asked Governor Kay Ivey to halt the execution of Geoffrey West, the man convicted of the killing.
Berry, who was 11 at the time, says he forgives West and opposes the death penalty, believing execution would not bring his mother back.
West, now 50, has expressed deep remorse and regrets his actions daily.
The two have exchanged letters and requested a meeting, denied by prison officials for security reasons.
Ivey acknowledged Berry’s forgiveness but stated she must uphold Alabama’s death penalty law for capital murder during a robbery.
The execution, scheduled for Thursday via nitrogen gas, follows a jury’s recommendation and the state’s emphasis on the crime’s brutality.
Both men urge young people in crisis to seek help instead of violence.
