Vizhinjam Port in Kerala set a national record by handling India’s deepest-draft vessel, MSC Verona, and reached 500 vessels in just 10 months.
Vizhinjam Port in Kerala has set a national record by handling the MSC Verona, a container vessel with a 17.1-meter draft—the deepest ever managed by an Indian port.
The milestone coincided with the port servicing its 500th vessel just 10 months after launching commercial operations in December 2024, including 28 Ultra Large Container Vessels, the highest number at any Indian port in such a short time.
The port has already processed 1.1 million TEUs, surpassing initial annual capacity projections.
With natural depths of 18–20 meters and minimal sediment movement, Vizhinjam is well-suited for the world’s largest ships, establishing itself as a key deep-water transshipment hub.
Its rapid growth reflects India’s advancing maritime infrastructure and expanding role in global trade.
