UK selects 77 projects for long-term energy storage, boosting capacity to 28.7 GW to cut gas use and lower costs.
Seventy-seven long-duration energy storage projects, including batteries, compressed air, and pumped hydro systems, have advanced to the final stage of a UK government-backed scheme.
Selected from 171 applicants, they total 28.7 gigawatts of capacity and aim to store excess wind and solar power for use during shortages, reducing reliance on gas plants and curtailment costs.
The initiative, managed by Ofgem under a “cap and floor” model, guarantees minimum returns to developers while requiring excess profits to be returned to consumers.
The UK currently has just 2.8 gigawatts of long-duration storage.
Final funding decisions are expected in summer 2026, as officials seek to strengthen energy security, lower costs, and support clean energy growth.
