UK court orders actor Noel Clarke to pay £3M in legal costs to The Guardian over false misconduct claims.
Actor Noel Clarke has been ordered by a UK High Court judge to pay at least £3 million in legal costs to The Guardian publisher, Guardian News and Media, after a lawsuit over seven articles and a podcast about sexual misconduct allegations.
The judge ruled the reporting was substantially true and in the public interest, calling Clarke’s claims “far-fetched” and “false,” and criticized his conduct, including raising unfounded conspiracy theories that increased costs.
Clarke, who represented himself and claimed to use ChatGPT for his response, argued the payment was disproportionate given his financial hardship and requested a delay pending appeal, but the court rejected that request.
Total legal costs exceeded £6 million, with the judge finding the interim £3 million payment reasonable and ordering it paid within 28 days.
