Two men in Azerbaijan face extremism charges for alleged sabotage and treason plot, disrupted before execution.
A Baku court has begun the trial of Fakhraddin Shahmurov, 41, and Jalal Muradov, 65, accused of plotting sabotage, hostage-taking, and undermining Azerbaijan’s constitutional order as members of an extremist group.
Arrested during a State Security Service operation, the defendants face charges including treason, forming a criminal association, and planning to seize a border customs post.
The case, presided over by Judge Elmin Rustamov, addressed language access for Shahmurov, who is of Lezgi ethnicity but fluent in Azerbaijani, including having published a poem in the language.
His defense requested a retrial over interpreter concerns, but the court rejected the motion, citing his language proficiency.
Prosecutors allege the group used encrypted social media, held secret meetings, and involved a foreign national in planning attacks.
The plot was disrupted before execution.
The next hearing is scheduled for October 6, with future sessions closed to the public.
