Tamil Nadu is poised to become a global shipbuilding hub after Cochin Shipyard Ltd and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd announced a combined Rs 30,000 crore investment in new greenfield shipyards. The projects, unveiled on September 23, 2025, are expected to create 55,000 jobs, including thousands of direct positions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the sharp decline in India’s domestic shipbuilding, from 40% of trade carried by Indian-built ships decades ago to just 5% today, attributing the drop to past policy shortcomings. The investments mark a strategic push toward self-reliance, economic growth, and maritime innovation, supported by national leadership and aligned with broader infrastructure initiatives.
