NYSDOT to add safety upgrades on Route 7 in Niskayuna after three pedestrian and motorcycle deaths.
The New York State Department of Transportation has announced safety upgrades on Route 7 in Niskayuna, including a raised median, after three pedestrian and motorcycle fatalities in 18 months, including the 14-year-old son of Assemblyman Robert Smullen.
Public pressure and advocacy from Smullen and residents like Joseph Yakel, who led a petition with over 1,300 signatures, have pushed for lane narrowing, crosswalks, better signage, and reduced speed limits.
Despite not meeting state thresholds for automatic upgrades, the DOT is moving forward with changes, while Smullen’s proposed memorial law, aimed at honoring crash victims, awaits Governor Hochul’s signature.
Lawmakers from both parties stress that comprehensive infrastructure improvements are urgently needed to prevent further deaths.
