New Zealand opens first Rural Training Hub in South Taranaki to boost healthcare staffing in rural areas.
New Zealand has launched its first Rural Training Hub in South Taranaki to strengthen rural healthcare by bringing health worker education closer to communities.
The initiative, announced by Associate Health Minister Matt Doocey and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Patterson during a roadshow in Hāwera, aims to improve recruitment and retention of doctors, nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals by integrating training with local health services, universities, and iwi.
The hub will offer on-the-job placements, career pathways, and support for trainees, building on existing programs like the Rural Medical Immersion Programme.
Four hubs will eventually be established—one in each Health NZ region—with dedicated coordinators and community involvement.
The government emphasizes the effort is critical for ensuring rural residents, who make up about one in five New Zealanders, receive timely, quality care.
