New Zealand began building a 24-km expressway to cut travel time, boost safety, and spur growth, after restoring its original design.
Construction has begun on New Zealand’s 24-kilometre Ōtaki to North of Levin Expressway, a key infrastructure project aimed at reducing travel times by up to 15 minutes, improving safety, and supporting regional growth.
The project, part of the broader Wellington northern corridor, includes 21km of four-lane and 3km of two-lane road, with work split between two construction alliances.
Originally facing criticism for cost-cutting changes that removed on-ramps and overbridges, the design was later restored.
Officials cite safety concerns on the existing highway, including 70 deaths and serious injuries since 2019, and highlight job creation and housing development benefits.
The expressway is funded through the Crown and National Land Transport Fund, with collaboration from local iwi and agencies.
