A new $100,000 H-1B visa fee and strict immigration rules could hurt U.S. tech-driven economic growth, OECD warns.
High-skilled tech migrants are vital to U.S. economic growth, according to Alvaro Pereira, outgoing OECD chief economist, who warned that a new $100,000 fee on H-1B visas and restrictive immigration policies could hinder long-term expansion.
The OECD raised its 2025 global growth forecast to 3.2% and the U.S. outlook to 1.8%, citing strong first-half performance and pre-tariff import stockpiling.
However, the organization cautioned that tariffs and workforce cuts may slow growth, especially due to labor shortages in information technology.
Pereira stressed that attracting global talent remains a key U.S. advantage, particularly amid rising demand from the AI-driven tech sector.
