Montana launches energy task force to address rising power needs and ensure affordability.
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte’s newly formed “Unleashing American-Made Energy Task Force” held its first meeting in Helena to tackle rising energy demands and affordability.
Created by executive order, the group includes state leaders, lawmakers, and industry representatives, chaired by Sonja Nowakowski of the Department of Environmental Quality.
It will examine electricity generation, transmission, and demand, addressing a projected 20% increase in western U.S. power needs by 2034 due to population growth, electrification, and data centers.
Despite added generation capacity since 2019, energy output has not kept pace, prompting a review of all energy sources—fossil fuels, wind, solar, and others—under a fuel-neutral approach.
The task force aims to ensure reliable, affordable power and will deliver recommendations by September 15, 2026, with some actions possible within months.
