Louisiana fails to track nearly 900 abandoned oil platforms, risking environment and safety.
Louisiana is failing to track nearly 900 abandoned oil platforms in its coastal waters, according to a report by True Transition, which found over 1,100 offshore structures near the coast, most of which are idle or abandoned.
The state does not maintain a registry of platforms, only wells, leaving no clear record of their locations or conditions.
Despite laws requiring removal at owners’ expense, Louisiana lacks a program or funding to decommission orphaned structures when companies go bankrupt.
Many of these aging, poorly maintained platforms remain in shallow waters, posing environmental and safety risks amid rising sea levels and stronger storms.
Federal and other state policies require decommissioning, but Louisiana’s enforcement is weak, and the state does not monitor whether wells have sunk due to land loss.
Neither major oil and gas trade groups responded to requests for comment.
