Lithuania allows military to shoot down unauthorized drones in its airspace starting October 2025.
Lithuania's parliament has approved emergency legislation allowing its military to shoot down drones violating its airspace, effective October 2025, following incidents involving Russian drones.
The law, passed with 117 votes, grants the defense minister authority to close airspace and destroy unauthorized drones, even if unarmed, based on military assessments.
Previously, force could only be used against drones posing immediate threats.
The move aims to enhance rapid response capabilities amid rising drone activity across NATO countries, including incursions in Estonia, Poland, and Denmark.
Restricted airspace zones can now be activated quickly, with civil aircraft requiring permission to fly in them.
Pilots must be notified at least 10 minutes in advance, and aircraft must have communication and tracking equipment by May 1, 2026.
The changes reflect Lithuania's proactive defense strategy in peacetime to address evolving aerial threats.
