Kinectrics wins contract to test Germany’s 300-km, 525kV HVDC cable project for renewable energy transport.
Kinectrics, a division of BWX Technologies, has been awarded a multi-year contract by Sumitomo Electric to provide commissioning testing for Germany’s A-Nord HVDC underground power project, a 300-kilometer, 525kV DC cable system set for completion by 2030.
The project, developed with transmission operator Amprion, will transport renewable energy from the North Sea to North Rhine-Westphalia, supporting Germany’s CO2 reduction goals.
Sumitomo Electric oversees the cable’s design, manufacturing, and installation.
Kinectrics will test 40-kilometer sections using up to 14 mobile resonant test systems with partial discharge detection to identify defects early, followed by final HVDC verification.
With global experience testing over 15,000 km of cables, Kinectrics emphasizes that early testing reduces failure risks and ensures reliability for long-distance transmission systems.
