Italy approves Eni’s plan to convert a refinery into a biorefinery, producing sustainable fuels by 2028.
Eni has received Italian government approval to convert part of its Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi refinery into a biorefinery, using Ecofining technology to produce sustainable HVO diesel and aviation fuel.
The project, set to begin operations in 2028, will process 550,000 tonnes of non-food biomass and waste annually, leveraging existing hydrogen and logistics infrastructure.
Traditional fuel production will continue without reduction in capacity.
The initiative supports Italy’s renewable energy goals and Eni’s plan to expand biorefining capacity to over 3 million tonnes by 2028 and more than 5 million by 2030, with potential SAF output reaching 2 million tonnes yearly.
