Ireland’s justice minister seeks to cut annual asylum applications to under 10,000, citing unsustainable costs and system strain.
Irish Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan aims to reduce annual asylum applications to fewer than 10,000, calling current levels—over 18,500 in 2024—unsustainable.
He cited a sharp rise from pre-pandemic averages, a surge in arrivals from Ukraine (over 114,000 between 2022 and 2024), and strain on the asylum system and accommodation services.
The International Protection Accommodation Service cost over €1 billion in 2024 and €1.2 billion in 2025, housing around 33,000 people.
O’Callaghan emphasized the need to speed up processing to reduce long stays and lower costs, noting a drop in nightly accommodation rates from €84 to €71, though he cautioned against expecting future rates at that level.
He also confirmed undergoing a “doorstep” identification check, part of 4,154 such checks conducted on flights between January and August.
