Hawaii to host first state high school surfing champs in 2026 at Maui’s Ho’okipa Beach Park.
Hawaii will host its first state high school surfing championship May 1–2, 2026, at Ho’okipa Beach Park on Maui, marking surfing’s official inclusion in the state’s interscholastic athletic program.
The event, announced by Governor Josh Green and supported by legislation, will feature shortboard, longboard, and bodyboarding divisions with teams from all five high school athletic leagues.
Organized by the HHSAA and the Maui Interscholastic League, which has run the sport since 2014, the tournament builds on years of advocacy and growing participation, especially among female athletes.
The inaugural competition aims to honor Native Hawaiian culture, expand athletic opportunities, and provide youth with competitive experiences.
