Former NFL running back Rudi Johnson, who played seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2004, died by suicide at age 45 on September 23, 2025, in Florida.
Drafted in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft, Johnson set the Bengals’ single-season rushing record with 1,458 yards in 2005 and recorded over 1,300 rushing yards in three consecutive seasons.
He finished his eight-year career with 5,979 rushing yards and 49 touchdowns, ranking fourth on the Bengals’ all-time list.
Known for his durability and community involvement, Johnson was also recognized for his standout college season at Auburn in 2000, where he earned SEC Player of the Year honors.
Reports indicate he had been struggling with mental health issues, possibly linked to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition associated with repeated head trauma in contact sports.
