Ghana risks losing its title as the world’s second-largest cocoa producer to Ecuador, whose output is rising due to sustainable agroforestry practices, higher farmer pay, and better yields.
Ghana’s production has declined to around 600,000 tonnes in 2025/26, down from previous decades, due to disease, illegal mining, and outdated farming.
Ecuador, meanwhile, is projected to produce over 650,000 tonnes by 2026/27 and could reach 800,000 tonnes by 2030, with farmers receiving up to 90% of global prices compared to 60–70% in Ghana.
Despite efforts to boost output, Ghana’s challenges threaten its long-standing position as the second-largest producer.
