Bangladesh's National Citizens’ Party challenges the Election Commission's rejection of its preferred "Shapla" symbol, citing legal and cultural grounds.
The National Citizens’ Party in Bangladesh is disputing the Election Commission’s refusal to assign the "Shapla" (water lily) symbol, arguing it is legally permissible despite the symbol not appearing on the official list of 115 approved symbols.
The party’s northern region chief, Sarjis Alam, called the decision a threat to electoral fairness, asserting the symbol’s cultural and political significance.
The EC’s senior secretary, Akhtar Ahmed, confirmed parties must choose from the approved list and that the NCP must propose an alternative, though a proposal to amend the list is pending.
Symbol allocation remains under review, with consultations set to begin September 28.
