Amazon faces FTC trial over claims it used deceptive website designs to trick users into Prime subscriptions, which it denies.
Amazon is on trial in Seattle over allegations it misled consumers into signing up for Prime through deceptive website designs, known as "dark patterns," according to the FTC.
The agency claims Amazon made enrollment easy with prominent free shipping buttons while obscuring cancellation, requiring a complex, multi-step process internally called the "Iliad Flow," which tricked millions into unintended subscriptions.
The FTC argues these practices violated consumer protection laws, citing internal documents describing the issue as an "unspoken cancer."
Amazon denies wrongdoing, saying its practices are standard in the subscription industry and that "dark patterns" lack a clear legal definition.
The trial, expected to last nearly a month and decided by a jury, follows criticism from Judge John Chun over Amazon’s handling of evidence.
It is a precursor to a larger antitrust case expected in 2027.
