A 20-year-old woman got a two-year community order and $2,000 fine for being in a stolen car during a high-speed chase, claiming she was trying to reach her partner’s funeral.
A 20-year-old Bathurst woman, Lilly Cowan, received a two-year community correction order and a $2,000 fine after being a passenger in a stolen Toyota Landcruiser during a police pursuit on June 6, 2025.
The vehicle, reported stolen from a local business, was tracked and led to a high-speed chase involving dangerous driving and evasion tactics.
Cowan, who claimed she was trying to reach her partner’s funeral after missing transport, said she didn’t know the car was stolen.
She was grieving the recent deaths of her father and partner, who died in a crash while en route to pick her up.
Though she had a prior criminal history and a medium to high risk of reoffending, Magistrate Gemma Slack-Smith acknowledged her emotional distress and ordered the community correction order, urging her to access support services.
