A 10-year-old autistic girl died in her Minnesota home due to a broken safety bed and unsanitary conditions, leading to felony charges against her parents.
A Crow Wing County couple, Heather and Darcy Cross, face felony and gross misdemeanor charges after their 10-year-old daughter, who had autism and medical conditions, was found dead in their Pine River home on August 25.
The child was using a safety bed designed for nighttime use, which was broken and unrepaired despite ordered parts.
Investigators found the bedroom in unsanitary condition with feces on walls and floors, and the girl showed signs of rigor mortis, indicating she had been dead for hours.
The 12-year-old sister was taken into protective custody.
The parents admitted using the bed beyond its intended purpose and said they last checked on the girl at 4:30 p.m.
They were charged with second-degree manslaughter and a child protection offense, held without bail or with high bail, and are scheduled for their next court date on October 1.
