The 2025 World Rowing Championships opened in Shanghai, China’s first time hosting the event and the city’s highest-level single-sport world championship this year.
Over 1,000 athletes from 55 nations competed at the upgraded Shanghai Water Sports Center, featuring a 2,250-meter, eight-lane course with enhanced accessibility for para athletes and safety measures including six rescue boats.
The event includes 23 boat classes, such as new mixed double sculls and mixed eight events, with China participating in 20.
Olympic champions Chen Yunxia and Zhang Ling advanced in the women’s double sculls, while Chinese teams secured semifinal spots in men’s quadruple sculls and lightweight double sculls.
Para-rowing events began with Shao Shasha in the PR1 women’s single sculls.
World Rowing’s Vincent Gaillard praised the organization, calling it a benchmark championship.
The competition runs through September 28.
