Two male endangered leopard sharks were filmed mating sequentially with one female in the wild off New Caledonia, offering rare insight into their reproductive behavior.
Australian researchers have filmed what is believed to be the first documented case of two male endangered leopard sharks mating sequentially with one female in the wild off New Caledonia.
The event, captured during a year-long monitoring program, shows the males, each about 2.3 meters long, engaging in brief mating attempts lasting 63 and 47 seconds before becoming immobile.
The footage, taken 15 kilometers off the coast, confirms the area as a critical mating habitat for the species, listed as endangered by the IUCN.
The discovery offers rare insights into the sharks’ natural reproductive behavior, which has mostly been studied in captivity.
Findings may support conservation efforts, including artificial insemination and genetic diversity research, and were published in the Journal of Ethology.
