Thailand to ban burn-polluted corn imports from 2026, aiming to reduce cross-border haze.
Thailand will ban imported animal-feed corn from fields where agricultural burning occurs starting January 1, 2026, requiring proof of burn-free sourcing to combat cross-border air pollution from neighboring countries.
The rule, pending cabinet approval, aims to reduce harmful haze linked to slash-and-burn farming in Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, and could boost corn imports from the U.S. and other nations with lower burn rates.
Currently, Thailand imports about 2 million tonnes annually, with domestic production covering only half of its 8 million-tonne feed demand.
During a transitional phase, importers can self-certify or use foreign or international documents, but stricter enforcement will follow under the Clean Air Act, including potential one-year import bans for noncompliance.
The policy supports broader environmental and trade goals, though final decisions await the new government.
