The Supreme Court will hear bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Meeran Haider, and Gulfisha Fatima in a 2020 Delhi riots case linked to alleged conspiracy under the UAPA.
The hearing, delayed due to scheduling and review issues, follows the Delhi High Court’s denial of bail to nine individuals, including the accused, citing premeditated violence during protests against the CAA and NRC.
The riots, which caused 53 deaths and over 700 injuries, are alleged to have been incited by inflammatory speeches.
Senior advocates representing the accused urged the court to act before Diwali, noting the detainees have been in custody for over five years.
The court has directed Delhi Police to respond, with the matter set for October 7.
