Singapore ordered Aupen and founder Nicholas Tan to correct false Instagram claims about IPOS, which falsely claimed IPOS advised against a trademark dispute with Target and favored foreign businesses.
Singapore handbag brand Aupen and founder Nicholas Tan have been ordered under POFMA to correct false claims made on Instagram about the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS).
The posts, dated September 9, 15, and 16, falsely stated IPOS advised against pursuing a trademark dispute with Target, claimed Singapore’s laws favor foreign businesses, and misrepresented IPOS’s position on legal reform.
Government fact-checkers confirmed the claims were false, noting they damaged public trust in IPOS and wrongly suggested local businesses should not defend their IP rights.
IPOS clarified it provided no legal advice, only general information, and encouraged independent counsel.
Aupen’s trademark is valid in Singapore, and any U.S. dispute with Target would be separate.
The correction directive requires publishing a government-provided link to the official clarification, but as of September 22, 2025, no correction had been posted.
