Pascal Lafolie, 58, stands trial in France for the 1994 murder of 17-year-old Nadege Desnoix, linked by DNA from a hairband.
Pascal Lafolie, 58, is on trial in Laon, France, for the 1994 murder of 17-year-old Nadege Desnoix, one of the country’s oldest cold cases to reach court.
Her body was found near her high school in Chateau-Thierry with a nylon cord and a rose; an autopsy showed no sexual assault.
The case remained unsolved for decades until 2021, when DNA from a hairband on her body matched Lafolie’s, whose DNA had been collected during a separate domestic violence case.
Lafolie, previously convicted of rape and sexual assault, initially confessed but later retracted his statement, claiming memory lapses due to a head injury he says occurred during an alleged attack by his brother, who died before Lafolie’s arrest and has been ruled out as a suspect.
He denies committing the murder, stating he was present but tried to intervene.
A verdict is expected Wednesday, with Lafolie facing up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
The victim’s family and legal representatives have expressed emotional relief over the progress made after decades of uncertainty.
