Paris’s Pompidou Centre is closing to the public on September 22, 2025, for a five-year, 460 million euro renovation to modernize its aging infrastructure.
The overhaul includes asbestos removal, improved climate control, enhanced accessibility and security, and a redesign to cut energy use by 40 percent, while preserving the building’s iconic exterior.
The permanent collection has already been removed, and temporary exhibitions, including a Wolfgang Tillmans retrospective, will conclude on the closure day.
The museum will remain open late with free entry and host a cultural event in October.
Funded by the French state, private donations, and a 50 million-euro pledge from Saudi Arabia, the project aims to restore the 1977 landmark’s functionality and safety, with an expected reopening around 2030.
The closure reflects broader concerns about the condition of Paris’s major cultural institutions.
