A Ngāpuhi-led farm in Kaikohe partners with T&G Fresh to expand berry production for domestic and export markets.
A Ngāpuhi iwi-led berry farm in Kaikohe, Northland, has partnered with horticulture company T&G Fresh in a 9.5-year venture to expand strawberry and blueberry production for domestic and export markets.
The project, operating under the name T&G Kaikohe Berryfruit, currently uses 3 hectares for strawberries and plans to grow blueberries on 7 hectares, with space for additional tunnels.
Ngāpuhi provides land, water, and labor, while T&G Fresh brings expertise, premium varieties, and market access.
The initiative follows challenges from Cyclone Gabrielle and early supply issues, but improved water access via the Matawii Dam and a committed local workforce are key advantages.
The venture employs 20 people, mostly from Kaikohe, and aims to serve as a model for iwi-led agriculture.
The domestic brand Kaikohe Berries will remain, while overseas marketing is being developed.
The partnership emphasizes long-term sustainability and community pride, supporting regional economic growth and food security.
