New Zealand allocates $413M to fix schools, especially rural ones, improving classrooms and creating construction jobs.
The New Zealand government has accelerated $413 million in school infrastructure investments, including $58 million in new funding, to address urgent maintenance and upgrades, particularly for rural, isolated, and small schools—representing nearly half of all state schools.
The initiative, announced by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Education Minister Erica Stanford, focuses on improving classroom conditions during summer holidays through repairs to roofs, windows, flooring, and heating, while also creating jobs in the construction sector.
The government reports halving the cost of a new classroom to $620,000 through offsite manufacturing and better project management.
Additional funding supports 270 school-led projects and expands the Ngā Iti Kahurangi programme.
These efforts are part of broader education reforms, including a new qualification system replacing NCEA, aimed at improving assessment reliability and student outcomes.
